Tax clinic reporting

The program updated its reporting methodology in mid-2024 to improve the identification of client circumstances and vulnerabilities. The full benefits of these changes will be realised from January 2025 and some data discrepancies are expected in the interim.

Key program achievements

  • 6,533 vulnerable Individuals and small businesses assisted (24% increase from 2023)
  • 7,909 lodgments completed (24% increase)
  • 2,878 taxpayers provided with advice and support including those in dispute with the ATO (20% increase)
  • 616 taxpayers provided support in managing tax debts (308% increase)
  • 1,505 taxpayers participated in 107 community education activities
  • 300 students participated in the program
  • 13,964 hours invested in directly assisting vulnerable clients (reported time spent addressing client matters, excluding all other time undertaking program activities).

Key client indicators

  • 757 migrants and temporary visa holders assisted
  • 295 taxpayers in remote and rural communities assisted
  • 606 incarcerated clients assisted (66% increase)
  • 312 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples assisted
  • 2,814 reported instances of financial hardship and/or low income (43% increase)
  • 251 reported instances of financial or domestic abuse (or both) (161% increase)
  • 297 taxpayers facing financial literacy challenges assisted
